What is your book about?
My experience in New York City, at the World Trade Center on 9/11/01 and its reverberating impact.
What inspired you to write your book?
To document a first-hand account for posterity, but also to encourage Americans to realize the important role we play in our democracy to put ethical, wise and capable people in public offices.
If you have a business related to your book, tell us about it:
I was a financial fraud management professional in the financial services industry, which is what put me in NY on that day.
What is a typical day like for you?
Some days I’m up early, left-brain-focused, dressed for “the office” , while other days I stay in PJs all day, mostly at the computer – reading, researching, musing and/or writing until late in the evening.
What do you most enjoy about what you do?
Writing. Even throughout a 40+ year business career , when writing opportunities were limited to business matters – letters, proposals, reports, editing – I loved writing. Now, as I move into the next phase of life, I can write whatever I want – and that’s like getting a reward!
What are some favorite books you’d recommend to our readers?
I love reading fiction – mystery, suspense, thriller, mostly. Several years ago, I discovered a superb British author, Zoe Sharp, who wrote the Charlie Fox series. Anyone looking for a strong, physical female protagonist, intriguing plots, wild rides and complex relationships, will enjoy them. I studied Sharp’s technique for writing action scenes, which helped me write the more physical sections of “In Its Shadow”.
What advice do you have to offer our readers?
Listen to advice from everyone, but don’t worry if not everything feels “right” to you. We are all unique. Do what works for you, what feels natural for you. If it works, then it’s “right” for you.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
That I’m an introvert. I have had to learn how to look comfortable when speaking or interacting with large groups of people. But if I had to choose, I’d rather be home reading a book.
What’s next for you?
I didn’t intend to write non-fiction; I wanted to write novels. But witnessing the 9/11 event impacted me deeply as an American. The message that protecting the freedom, security and opportunities for all Americans should always be priority #1 for our government leaders. It wasn’t then and it is not today. So, I plan to continue to write for every venue I can find to support that message. It may be a few more years before I try to write that novel!
