What is your book about?

From the Root to the Fruit, Rising Above Adversities is a memoir that documents my journey from nothing to something, struggle to triumph. It highlights the fact that my adversities did not add to my doom, but were used as steppingstones to discover my ultimate purpose.

It epitomizes my life experiences, including my grassroot encounters and upbringing as well as triumphs and successes. It might also be called a book of perseverance.

Stemming from the bowels of poverty, from an early age, gave me the zest to change the norm. I was driven to be the change that I wanted to see. I grew up in a household that was headed by her mother, who is the most hardworking lady on this earth. Her work ethics is unmatched. She has six children, four of whom were fathered by her. My father was absent from my life, so mummy had to capitalize on opportunities working odd jobs in order to cater for our needs.

This book epitomizes using aspects of one’s past to pave the way for the future. Our life experiences shape us into the individuals we are today. We go through numerous disappointments and belittling encounters in our life, but we cannot allow those to dissuade our dreams. We must use our experiences as steppingstones to reach our destination.

Our society tends to focus on the product, yet fail to highlight the process that leads to the end product. Where we are from or our start doesn’t have to interfere with where we want to go. This book promises to take readers from a place of complacency to purpose- driven as well as motivate them to push beyond their limits.

What inspired you to write your book?

I was inspired to write this book for more than one reasons. 1. I want to leave a legacy for my offspring, so that they can use my hardship as reference point to appreciate what they have in life and take nothing for granted. 2. I wrote this book because I want to share my struggles with single parent mothers, high schoolers facing peer pressure, poverty-stricken youth, college students experiencing financial struggles and the average man trying to make ends meet. I want to give them the assurance that they are not alone and it’s possible to rise above their adversities because I have done so triumphantly. Additionally, I was intentional in sharing the message that there is ‘power in your pain’ and hope in your despair.

Can you describe your writing process? How did you get your book written and how long did it take?

My writing process is stimulated by inspiration and passion. I write at my best in the early mornings and when alone in tranquility. When I am inspired to write, I just hold the pen or pencil and follow the directive of the Most High. When I am driven to write based on passion a lot of emotions are infused in my writing. My book was written while I was doing my master’s degree , conducting my action research and after welcoming a new baby while having one going through the terrible two stage . My babies did not sleep during the days so it took me five nights to write my book.

What was your publishing process like? How did you publish your book and how long did it take?

The process of publishing was very smooth because my publisher walked me through the process step by step. I had several consultation meetings and received numerous resources to aid the process. I published through a hybrid publisher. It took six weeks to publish my book.

How do you hope your book impacts the world?

At the initial stage of its composition, I was hoping that my book impacts the world in a positive way. At this point , my book is shifting people’s perspective on how they deal with their adversities. I have shared with the world that it is possible to use the sour tamarind that life gives you to make tamarind balls. I have gotten a lot of positive feedback about the impact that it is having on people’s life through customers’ reviews. This book is pushing individuals to go beyond their limits, rise above their adversities and use their adversities as steppingstones to reach their ultimate goal and fulfill their purpose. The milestones that From the Root to the Fruit: Rising Above Adversities have crossed is a testament of the impact it is making in this world. It was nominated for the Kingdom Indie Author Award , made it to the final , is an Amazon Best Seller Book , its title was used for Jamaica Day 2023, and soon it will be an international award- winning book.

Are there any people and/or books that have inspired you along your journey?

My mother, babies and husband are my greatest inspiration. They push me to be my best possible self. On the other hand, with regards to books , I get a lot of inspiration reading Ben Carson’s “THINK BIG” and Alvin’s Day, “If Caterpillar Can Fly So Can I.”

What’s next for you?

An author will always write.

What advice would you offer fellow authors who are just getting started?

As an author, there are lots of noises out there, don’t be distracted, own your niche, be intentional about your brand (what do you what to be known for?). Be persistent with your message.
