What is your book about?

Are you shy, reserved, introverted? Are you frustrated by forced socializing? Do you feel you have to pretend to be someone else? In the award-winning memoir, In Search of Courage: An Introvert’s Story, author Steve Friedman shares his struggles both at work and at home. His long path to overcome countless roadblocks is both “heart-wrenching and heartbreaking.”

What inspired you to write your book?

As a kid and young adult, I knew I was an introvert. Yet the lack of support made me feel different…not normal. Decades later I wanted to share my struggles, my unhealthy coping skills, and my path to overcome. I hope my memoir will provide inspiration for others to embrace their best selves.

If you have a business related to your book, tell us about it:

I post a weekly blog on a variety of personal and work-related topics on introversion at www.BeyondIntroversion.com.

What is a typical day like for you?

My morning is reserved for researching and writing my next books and blogs, as well as connecting with readers and organizations. The rest of my day includes family time, reading, walks, and dreaming.

What do you most enjoy about what you do?

I love the discovery. Through writing I’m learning about myself, but I’m also connecting with other writers and introverted readers. They are my spark!

What are some favorite books you’d recommend to our readers?

Favorite Memoirs: Heavy (Kiese Laymon); How to Write an Autobiographical Novel (Alexander Chee); Self-Improvement: Daring Greatly (Brene Brown); Introvert Inspiration: The Shy Writer Reborn (C. Hope Clark), Firefly Magic (Lauren Sapala)

What advice do you have to offer our readers?

Writing and editing use two very different parts of your brain. Don’t edit while you write. Let the creative juices flow to get the manuscript on paper. There will be plenty of time for editing later. Oh, and have fun!

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

Contrary to popular belief, this pandemic is not much easier for introverts like me. We too enjoy social interaction, though in shorter increments.

What’s next for you?

I’m writing a business leadership book for introverts and my daughter and I are researching a book to assist adults with Down syndrome in their pursuit of independence.
