Annual salary range/hourly pay rate? The pay varies greatly. It is tough to be specific because a lot of publishing work is done by contractors. It can take time to build up your work and client base and the experience to make it lucrative.

Can you define the duties of an interior layout designer? What does your day look like? I have worked in multiple publishing capacities, including project management, operations, customer service, and editing. Currently, I mostly work in editing and operations. My day includes a flexible mix of answering emails, meetings, communicating with designers, ensuring tasks and objectives are completed, and copy editing and proofreading.

What sort of training/education did you receive? The most meaningful and helpful education I’ve received has been informal and nontraditional. I have completed two Google Professional certifications in project management and data analytics. I have read and studied many books and manuals on my own. However, the most helpful and priceless education and training I’ve received has been on the job from professionals in the industry. I continuously seek knowledge and growth, which has greatly paid off.

What’s a recent project you worked on? I work on a lot of projects! I have worked on several books and PIVOT Magazine in the past few weeks.

What’s your favorite part of your job? I love editing and working with authors. I am passionate about words, storytelling, and communication. My whole job is such a gift to me, and I’m thankful for what I get to do every day.

What’s something someone wanting to get into your career field should know? It can be unpredictable. I am not a risk taker, and I work with many brave entrepreneurs. Publishing can be a volatile field, and it’s important to be adaptable and intrinsically motivated. I would say it’s like anything: If you don’t love it, don’t do it. There will obviously be days or projects that are hard and unfulfilling. However, when you are where you belong, there is a different flow. It’s important to honor that.
