Barbara knows about writing, publishing and book marketing. She has worked with top New York and West Coast publishers for over 20 years as co-creator of the Maui Writers Conference and marketing director of the San Francisco Writers Conference and San Francisco Writing for Change. She is an author and writer of feature articles, and was a newspaper columnist and food critic in Hawaii. All of her books have Hawaiian themes. (She lived on Maui for 15 years.)
Her popular talk, Independent Publishing: A Recipe for Success, draws on her experiences in both traditional publishing (Celestial Arts, Ten Speed Press/Random House); with a small publishing house (Mutual Publishing based in Honolulu) and her own self-publishing imprint (Pendulum Publishing) she started in 2002 with long-time friend Sue Dyer.
