Melissa Washington is a Navy veteran,small business owner; speaker, author, corporate event professional and LinkedIn workshop trainer who is passionate about connecting with people to engage, educate and inspire others across the nation.
After proudly serving her country in the United States Navy, Melissa earned her bachelor’s degree in business management from University of Phoenix and transitioned into a successful career in staffing and recruiting for more than 10 years working for both boutique agencies and global Fortune 500 companies.
Melissa was laid off from her job in 2009 due to a failing economy, marking the beginning of a nearly two-year journey and career reinvention that allowed her to use her passion for helping others. It all started with holding LinkedIn workshops for job seekers at her dining room table and has since exploded into what her business is today.
Melissa wears many hats, including: author of “Get Back to Work, which includes an expanded chapter on using LinkedIn; principle of SmartNet Strategies providing LinkedIn training workshops for individuals and companies and sought-after speaker offering presentations on LinkedIn and job-seeking tools. She is also, executive director of Active Job Seekers of America (ASJA) and board member of Working Women International both based in Sacramento, California.
Melissa has been featured on ABC News 10, Fox News 40 and Capital City Radio, as well as in Style Magazine and the Sacramento Business Journal. She has conducted numerous workshops for people in career transition at Beale Air Force Base, Building Industry Association Members in Transition Group, Sacramento Area Human Resources Association Members in Transition, Veterans Network Reemployment Network, and Employment Development Department.
She is the Sacramento Business Journal 2011 recipient of the prestigious 40 Under 40 award for her work as executive director of Active Job Seekers of America, and has received nominations for Woman of the Year from the California 4th Assembly District in 2012 and California Women Veteran of the Year Leadership in 2013.
