This month we asked nonfiction authors to answer this question: How has being an author impacted your life? Here’s what they had to say:
Pam Brossman
Becoming and Author changed my life. Not only has it helped me to impact thousands and thousands of lives around the world, it has also allowed me to create a hugely successful global business. There are many ways you can use a book to entertain, educate, enhance and elevate readers with your knowledge and expertise. I believe everyone should share their wisdom in a book and I am very proud to have 13 x #1 Best Sellers myself and over 100 #1 Best Selling students impacting lives with their own message.

It has provided a platform for authority. To have written about specific subjects – Parenting, Marriage Preparation and Communication in Relationships (best seller) it has opened up doors validating my expertise and knowledge in these areas. It has also allowed me to share my knowledge with many people wanting and needing help to make their life better. I am a Counselling Psychotherapist and author of 3 books plus have written in 2 others.

Being an author has changed and impacted my life in ways I never imagined. Sure, it can be hard in terms of trying to create a stable income, but it has also brought so many fascinating people into my life! For so many of us, we struggle to deviate from the ‘life map’ that society tells us we should be following. We get stuck in jobs we hate, or relationships that don’t nourish us, simply because we think these things are a marker of our success. Being an author is not an ‘easy’ or necessarily conventional job, but for me, I love the opportunities it brings to have important conversations and change people’s lives for the better.

Rachel Favilla
Publishing my first book at 22 was surreal. Exciting and terrifying, it left me feeling far more vulnerable than I’d anticipated. That said, when people tell me that my words have changed their approach to life and that the book’s cheeky humour brought them to tears of laughter, I know that the investment – time, money and faith – was worth it. Being an author is something no one prepares you for. It’s like parenthood. If you knew how hard the process really was, you wouldn’t get pregnant (in this case, with paper), but once you’ve jumped in you’re invested and the knowing that this is what you were born to do outweighs the fear of the unknown.

Lori Mihalich-Levin
Loving writing and policy landed me in the legal profession, but it wasn’t until I became a parent that I became an author. Writing a book, first and foremost, allowed me reach many more new moms than I had been able to previously, to help them address the challenges of returning to work after maternity leave. It added credibility to my platform, which has helped me to land more speaking engagements. And it allowed me to cross an important goal off my life Bucket List!
Lori Mihalich-Levin, JD, is the founder of Mindful Return LLC, a program that helps new parents return to work after parental leave, a health care partner at a global law firm, and the author of Back to Work After Baby: How to Plan and Navigate a Mindful Return from Maternity Leave. https://www.mindfulreturn.com/

Writing and publishing a book seemed the kind of thing other people did, not me! So holding the final printed copy in my hand, made me realise I could achieve anything when I set my mind to it.
From this belief that anything is possible, came great inner confidence. With increased confidence I was able to ‘put myself out there’ on social media without fear, I was inspired to start a local Meetup group and help others. This created a ‘following’ (there are now over 500 members). From there I taught and coached, sharing what I’d learned with others (initially for free) and them charging for my services, soon I discovered that I was a profitable business owner!
I also developed a love for writing and reflecting and sharing, I wrote blogs, social media content and a second book. I have been invited as a speaker to women’s groups and even corporate lunch and learn events. As a 55 year old women, who thought she was ‘over the hill’ I ‘ve had a new lease of life and fulfilled my desire to be a good role model for my daughters. Froswa’ Booker-Drew, PhD
Being an author has impacted my life significantly. I’ve always been private about my personal thoughts in a public platform. Writing for me is a place of vulnerability and sharing your thoughts and experiences for others to read that you don’t know can be challenging. It takes courage to place your thoughts on paper for others to identify with or even critique. Being an author has allowed me to not only help others by sharing my story but it has been a catalyst for my own growth.
