Learn How to Write a Better Memoir
Self-Study Course with Instructor Linda Joy Myers
In this three-part online course, you will learn how to:
- Craft a story using important elements
- Build your memoir block by block
- Work with truth and family
- Manage your own inner critic
What to Expect Each Week
Class 1: Beginnings; finding your story and themes. And scenes—the building blocks of your memoir.
Class 2: Breaking silence—family, truth, and the inner critic.
Class 3: Developing your structure and character. Plus we will cover revision and editing.
Over the years as I’ve worked with memoirists, I’ve observed craft elements that needed further developing for a reader to become immersed in the story. Many memoirists have long histories with journaling or they come from an academic background, both of which were true for me.
Becoming a storyteller requires new skills and craft, such as creating scenes, developing characters, creating a story arc, and other elements common to novel writing and story creation. And for memoirists there is another element: the psychological and emotional feelings of exposure—exploring your truths, worrying about your family’s reaction if they read your memoir, and the inner critic that delivers all the reasons why you shouldn’t be writing your story!
We will address all of these issues and more in this three-part course. Come prepared to take notes, ask questions, and do a little homework, too!

The course is intended for memoir writers with all skill levels. Whether you’re just getting started or you have been writing for years, you will discover essential tactics for writing a better memoir–one that readers don’t want to put down and can’t wait to talk about with friends!
