About Dr. Jameelah Medina
Dr. Jameelah Medina is the author of dozens of publications, including: books such as The ABCs of Living a Good Life, The Afro-Latin Diaspora and a second in press, academic journal articles such as Body Politicking and the Phenomenon of ‘Passing’ in Sage’s Feminism & Psychology and This Battlefield Called My Body: Warring over the Female Muslim Body” in a special issue of Religions, newspaper articles, book chapters and essays, education and training materials, as well as articles on a variety of blogs. Dr. Medina’s overarching theme in her work is using education as a tool for social justice. Her focus areas include: diversity and inclusion, gendered racism and colorism within communities of color, gendered Islamophobia, social and cultural capital of marginalized and minoritized communities, cultural ecology of high-achieving students, intimate partner violence relating to academic success and persistence, post-trauma survivor resilience, and identity formation and hybrid identities. She has appeared on CNN, ABC News, KTLA 5, CBS 2/KCAL 9, Fox News, NPR, Deepak Chopra’s Wellness Radio, and has been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine as a Leader of the Future. She is also a monthly contributor to Feminism and Religion and her work has also appeared on Vida AfroLatina, Altmuslimah, Feminist, Race Wire, Latinovations, and in The Islamic Monthly, Feminism & Psychology, Religions, Westside Story, and La Prensa. Additionally, on three occasions during her doctoral studies, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Special Representative Farah Pandith invited Jameelah to the State Department for wisdom sessions, briefings, and special events. Dr. Medina earned her PhD in Higher Education and Master’s in Education from Claremont Graduate University. She also graduated with her BA (cum laude) in Spanish from Claremont McKenna College.
