About Michele Steeb

Michele has spent her career in causes for the public good.  She began on the primary fund-raising team for a U.S. Senate campaign.  She went on to manage several successful political campaigns, founded two technology focused companies in the eCommerce and financial services sectors and served for four years as Vice President of Political Affairs for the California Chamber of Commerce.  In 2006, Michele joined the board of a struggling emergency shelter for women and children.  In 2007, she transitioned to its Chief Executive Officer.

She transformed the 30-day shelter into a comprehensive 18-month program serving 270 women and children helping them to actively address and overcome the root causes of their poverty and homelessness. Under her leadership, Saint John’s expanded from providing “a temporary roof over heads” to offer mental health services, drug and alcohol counseling, high school diplomas, financial management and extensive hands-on employment training in an effort to bring about real and lasting change in their lives. The three social enterprises she launched: Plates Café and Catering, First Steps Child Development Center and Plates Midtown serve as hands-on “real-world” employment training for the women they serve.

Also during her tenure, Michele grew Saint John’s funding portfolio from one primary, government-funding source– with a $1M annual operating budget– to a $7.5 M annual operating budget. By design, the diversified streams now include: earned income from its social enterprises; multiple public funding sources; a strong base of individual, foundation and corporate support; and, a 5-year, $8 M+ contract she executed with the State of California in 2017 to serve women transitioning from prison.  She led the efforts to secure $4+M public and private capital funding to acquire over 50,000 square feet of operating capacity, enabling Saint John’s to become a first-ever “homeowner”.

Michele has also worked diligently for the broader issues of poverty and homelessness in the Sacramento region, serving on the Sacramento Policy Board to End Homelessness for four years, and as a member of the steering committee that led the efforts to launch Sacramento Steps Forward.

In 2012, Governor Brown appointed Michele to serve on the Board of California’s Prison Industry Authority, the agency that provides employment training and rehabilitative services to incarcerated individuals.  She served in that capacity through 2019.

Michele’s family made the decision to relocate to Lucas, Texas in March 2019.  Accordingly, Michele stepped down as CEO of Saint John’s.

Her extensive on-the-ground experience with Saint John’s led her to author, “Answers Behind the Red Door, a battle plan for the homelessness explosion challenging our nation” and to join the Texas Public Policy Foundation as a Senior Fellow to launch and oversee their initiative to transform United States’ and Texas’ homelessness policy.

Michele is a noted public speaker, has authored and co-authored numerous editorials on homelessness and has received numerous awards and honors for her work in helping people realize their full and God-given potential.
