Back in 2005, I was pitching my very first book at a writer’s conference, and the following week an agent called me, Michael Larsen, and gave me the best advice that could have ever applied to getting a book deal or even as a self-published author. He said, “I like what you’re doing, but nobody knows who you are.

You need to be speaking to thousands of people every year.” And that was a moment for me. I thought, “Okay, how am I gonna do that?” I built a website. I built an email list. I self-published that first book, and it started selling right away, and it was selling because I was building an audience. It was working, and the following year, I landed my first book deal as a result because I was reaching thousands of people every year.

So, the same advice still applies whether you wanna get a book deal or you plan to self-publish. If you wanna sell books, you need to be reaching thousands of people every year. It works.
