Launching your nonfiction book, it requires planning, and you don’t want to do it at the wrong time of the year. Generally speaking, summer is a lousy time to launch books. People are on vacation. They’re distracted. They’re not paying attention to book launches. The fall can be a decent time to launch your book, and I’m talking August, September, early October, good time to get people’s attention, especially when they’re coming back from their summer breaks.
Once you’re moving into November, December, you’re competing with holidays, and unless you have a holiday gift style book, I often recommend authors wait until the new year. Because another reason is that Jan– by January, your book sounds like it’s old. It has a copyright date from the previous year. So it can make sense to wait until the January timeframe.
January, February is a great time to launch nonfiction books, especially those tied into New Year’s goals, right? So health and fitness books, business books, these do well at the beginning of the year. And then overall, January through May are a good timeframe for launching your nonfiction book. One more consideration is don’t rush your book launch.
Just because your book is done doesn’t mean it should be out in the next three weeks, right? So plan your runway. Make sure you have a strategic plan for your launch, whether you’re going to do a pre-sale or a soft launch. These are all important considerations.
